Yes, it is recommended to start varenicline one week before your quit date. However, some people may need a few weeks for varenicline to work best. To increase success, you may choose to start taking varenicline before you decide on a formal quit date, and then they can select a date to quit in the future.The standard extended quit date is within days eight and 35 of treatment, but some patients may be more successful by setting a quit date up to 12 weeks after starting varenicline. If you decide to set this prolonged quit date, you should decrease the number of cigarettes you smoke by 50% from baseline within the first four weeks, by 75% from baseline within eight weeks, and then stop by 12 weeks.
